About the role

We are looking for outstanding rail industry mechanical maintenance experts to join the Rio Tinto Rail Network Maintenance workshop team in the newly created position of Maintenance Technician – Mechanical to provide specialised trade expertise within the Rail Maintenance and Breakdown Team involving conducting routine inspections, servicing, commissioning, up track shut support, along with maintenance activities.

This role is a great opportunity for highly skilled mechanical maintenance specialists to work closely with leadership to ensure the safe delivery of the maintenance strategy and requirements. Working an 8 days on, 6 off roster and reporting to the Rail Maintenance Workshop Supervisor, you will be able to:

 

  • Demonstrate a high level of technical fault finding with particular reference to mechanical and Hydraulics systems for all disciplines of rail maintenance machines, including Tamper & Regulator Machines, Mobile Flashbutt Welders, and Mobile Plant.
  • Diagnose and correct problems in complex mechanical process control systems, to avoid or minimise, any impact on reliability.
  • Perform the calibration of all on board Hydraulic Systems for all Rail Maintenance machines, including Tamper & Regulator Machines, Mobile Flashbutt Welders, and Mobile Plant equipment.
  • Undertake repairs and fault diagnosis of all on board mechanical and Hydraulics systems for all disciplines of rail maintenance machines, including Tamper & Regulator Machines, Mobile Flashbutt Welders, and Mobile Plant.
  • Provide breakdown support for up-track rail teams.
  • Undertake inspection, fault finding and root cause analysis of breakdowns of track maintenance machinery
  • Apply principles of root causes of failure and make recommendations to ensure that the probability of repeat failures is minimised
  • Assist your leader with the training of new and existing employees, contractors and apprentices
  • Take a lead role in ensuring a safe working environment through deployment of Critical Risk Management and other Rio Tinto safety programs
  • Provide technical mechanical expertise to drive continuous improvement of systems, equipment and processes
  • Assist in the development and continual review of Operating and Maintenance Job standards
  • Liaise with relevant OEM’s to ensure best practice maintenance

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Sound knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and other relevant computer programs
  • Expert ability in troubleshooting faults with all mechanical systems for all disciplines of rail maintenance machines, including Tamper & Regulator
  • Expert ability in troubleshooting faults with the locomotive systems
  • Expert ability to interpret service and operation manuals
  • Significant GE Locomotive maintenance experience
  • Current certificate of competence
  • Rail industry experience
  • Experience in utilising safety systems
  • Previous leadership experience is desire to build a career with our rail team as a leader

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Current High Risk Work License ( WP, LF, DG, VLC, RB, C2)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and autonomously in varying locations
  • Relevant additional post trade or technical qualifications
  • SAP computer system training
  • Exposure to post trade Hyradualics experience
  • Exposure to Plasser track machines
  • Demonstrated post trade Pneumatics experience
  • Ability to read system schematics for hydraulic / pneumatics
  • Ability to read system schematics for electrical
  • Significant experience on FBW machines
  • Significant experience on FBW machines
  • M3 safe working qualification

Where you will be working

Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 15 mines across the Pilbara via 1,700km of track. With depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), each train is operated by a single driver and comprises up to three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.7 kilometres in length with over 40 trains operating per day. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.
